Lock Types

Maybe up until now you haven’t thought about the type of locks you have. However, now that you have an option of locks to use, you have to give it serious consideration. When having a home constructed or a home renovated then it is possible that you’ll be able to decide for yourself, which locks you would like. If you leave it to someone else, they may not use the sturdiest locks to secure your home.

The Mechanics of Your Lock

We believe that it might be of interest to explain the mechanics of your lock, as this may help you make up your mind about the type of lock you’ll use. Most standard locks have a doorknob lock. This is a pretty simple and straight forward type of lock to install. However, this is also the type of lock that should only be used on interior doors. If you don’t know this then you may end up having it installed on your exterior doors. This would be very easily for a thief to break. That is why it is in your best interest to consult with a knowledgeable locksmith who knows all that there is to know about locks.

Here is a list of some of the locks that we install most often:

• Pin Tumbler Lock – A pin lock has pins that must align with the locks locking mechanism. If it doesn’t then it will not disengage when the key is inserted.  
• Warded Lock – A warded lock has a bolt in the lock that will disengage when the correct key is inserted. It is the ward that actually obstructs the bolt from moving when the wrong key is inserted. The bolt will not move until the right key is inserted into the lock.  
• Lever Tumbler Lock – Again, there is a bolt that will not move until the right key is inserted.

The locking function of the type of key that you need will be important to what you want it to do. Do you want a lock that will simply keep a door shut or do you want a lock that cannot be easily compromised? This should be determined before you attempt to purchase a lock. You shouldn’t purchase a lock that will enable someone to use a passkey to gain access inside, as this would not offer you much protection. In fact, it is illegal to use a passkey without permission.

Electronic locks have certainly become more popular today than more than ever. This is likely due to the level of convenience that it offers to those who use them. You can choose from the following types of electronic locks.

• Biometric lock – You will usually find this type of lock in government buildings, hospitals or places where there are sensitive information and high-profile people. It uses personal characteristics to identify the person attempting to gain access, such as a fingerprint. Once the correct one is identified the lock will disengage.
• Push Button Locks – This type of lock uses a code to unlock. Once the keypad has been installed, the code is programmed. Once programmed you must put in the correct code so that the lock will disengage. Some of the push button locks have internal motors and magnets that engage the lock. It is an easy lock to program and is a great option for keeping out intruders.
